Get to know the Canary Islands
The Canary archipelago is blessed with warm weather all year round. It attracts tourists from all over the world in search of its kind temperatures, its virgin landscape, the orography drawn by its ancient volcanos, its tropical nature that floods the island with green and, above all, its beaches of fine sand or volcanic rock, its crystalline Atlantic waters and the warmth hospitality of its people.
A visit must be made to Santa Cruz of Tenerife, with its Castillo de San Juan Bautista, the Torre de San Andrés, the Catedral de Santa Cruz and the Church of San Francisco de Asís. In Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, you must see the Castillo de la Luz, the Catedral de Santa Ana, the Casa de Colón, the Museo Canario, the Ermita de San Telmo and the Antigua muralla de Las Palmas.
There are numerous villages in Tenerife, Gran Canarias and Lanzarote that also merit a visit. In Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz, Garachico, Candelaria, Adeje and San Cristóbal de la Laguna, a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, are all worth checking out. In Gran Canaria, you must visit Agaete, Arucas, Mogán San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Telde. In Lanzarote, go see Yaiza, Uga, San Bartolomé, Villa de Teguise and Haría.
An example of Tenerife’s beautiful nature is its Teide National Park. In Lanzarote, you will be amazed by its lunar landscape of volcanic origin, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The Timanfaya National Park is another must-see, with its volcanoes, such as the Fire Mountains, the Caldera del Corazoncillo and the Montaña Rajada. In Lanzarote, there is also the natural park of the Chinijo archipelago, where numerous species of marine birds live. In the south of Gran Canaria, you will often see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.
There is an abundance of beaches in this region. In Tenerife, go to Playa de las Teresitas, Playa de los Cristianos, Playa de Antequera, El Bollullo and La Arena. In Gran Canaria, check out Playa del Inglés and Playa de Dunas de Maspalomas with its large choice of nautical sports, the most popular being surfing and windsurfing. The coastal zone of Lanzarote contains important beaches such as Orzola, Famara, Papagayo, Las Conchas, Los Charcones and Playa Blanca.
Thanks to their ideal location, these islands offer amazing seafood, such as grouper, wreckfish, gilt-head bream and moray eel. Local products such as potatoes, the Canary Island bananas and D.O.C. wine are also staples. Try typical dishes such as the Canary Island soup, papas arrugadas con mojo, sancocho, ropa vieja, potaje de berros, gofio escaldao, cabrito conejero, caldo de millo con garbanzos, frangollo and tollos. For dessert, be sure to try bienmesabe, leche asada and huevos mole.
Ah! And don’t forget to come to the Canary Islands for Carnival!
