Located in the Lea-Artibai river valley in the province of Vizcaya, amid the mountainous coastal environs that typify northern Spain, is the Hotel Antsotegi—formerly an ancient ironworks whose first documented activity dates back to the fifteenth century. The complex consists of a mansion, a forge, a watermill and part of the adjoining water infrastructure, and a simple bridge. The height and loftiness of the complex is impressive, especially when seated in the lounge, in light of the fact that the entire structure rests on a single, robust pillar. Inside, virtually the entire original layout of the forge has been preserved. The charming hotel’s bright, warm lounge area arranged around a glowing fireplace is spacious and inviting, and also offers an interesting library. This vast, airy space awes guests, who recover their sense of spatial perception in rooms named after local mountain peaks. Wooden beams, walls of exposed stone or papered in pastel tones, and simple, cosy, rustic décor captivate the weary traveller.
