As Janelas Verdes is a four-star boutique hotel sitting in an 18th-century palace of the old aristocratic district of Lapa, next to the National Museum of Ancient Art, on the banks of the Tagus River. It is the best choice in order to get to know the most authentic side of Lisbon in a romantic, quiet and historical setting. In fact, it is often said that this building, which belonged to the Counts of San Lourenço-Sabugosa, inspired the novel 'Os Maias' by the famous Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós.
Its decoration is the work of Graçinha Viterbo’s studio, preserving the Portuguese noble houses unique atmosphere. A classic flavour permeates the entire palace, where you can see works of art, books and photographs of the aristocratic family that inhabited it, who in its time also opened the doors of their house for artists and literati meetings. The hotel offers 29 rooms, including double and superior, all of them spacious, decorated in soft tones of coral and wood. The bathrooms follow the same line, between classicism and modernity, using typical Lisbon tiles as their main decorative element.
Last but not least, probably the biggest charm of this hotel are its common areas. On the ground floor, there is a living room with a small bar, as well as a very cosy interior patio, where it is delightful to have breakfast in spring and summer while contemplating the façade vine or the wrought iron spiral staircase. On the top floor, you will find a lovely library with sitting area, fireplace and a terrace overlooking the Tagus, where you can enjoy a pleasant time reading and drinking coffee or tea.
As Janelas Verdes is named after the street where it is located, allowing you to explore the less touristic but more authentic neighbourhoods of Lapa and Madragoa. It is also very well connected to visit the neighbourhood of Belem and the rest of the best-known ones, such as La Baixa and the spectacular Plaza del Comercio.
