The word Riad or Riyad is the Arabic translation of "Garden", and it is not a coincidence as this is what these unique buildings became: small gardens for relaxation and tranquility in the midst of a medina full of shops and bustle. In Marrakech, the Madrilenian Jose and Higinio are responsible for the rehabilitation of the Echerid family’s nineteenth century house. Thanks to them, after all this time and an impressive recovery work, the Palacio de las Especias has regained its former glory as the hotel opened its doors in early 2013. This riad is dotted with objects related to the past history of the building, collected by the antique dealers in the area. Its seven rooms take the names of the gates of Marrakech, to invite visitors to discovery of its corners and to relax at the end of the day. Notable among these is the Bab Er-Raha suite, overlooking the central courtyard and traditional hammam bath, with the possibility of enjoying a bath of spices. In the common areas, the murmur of
the fountain is the soundtrack that transports us to another time, to a past with the flavor of the couscous tayines which are offered in the restaurant.
