Aguascalientes, officially Estado Libre y Soberano de Aguascalientes, is one of the 31 states that together with the Federal District make up the 32 states of Mexico.
Aguascalientes is located in the center-north region of the country. It is part of the macro-region Bajío. It has no outlet to the sea; It borders to the north with Zacatecas and to the south with Jalisco. The name Aguascalientes (hot waters) comes from the thermal waters that the founders discovered here. It represents 0.3% of the country's surface. Like the other states of the federation, Aguascalientes has its own local constitution, criminal legislation, laws and shield.
Its capital is the city of Aguascalientes, the second most populated city of the State is Jesús María, which together with San Francisco de los Romo make up the Metropolitan Area of Aguascalientes. It is the fourteenth most important city in Mexico and the eighth in the Human Development Index.
