ARACENA BOUTIQUE HOTELS & RURAL HOMES, SPAIN RUSTICAE

In the north of Huelva, lying on Sierra Morena’s western slopes, you will find “Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche” Natural Park, the second largest in Andalusia, enjoying mild climate, natural and cultural heritage preserved by its isolation, in a perfect symbiosis between man and nature. Its “dehesas” of holm and cork oaks stand out, as well as chestnut forests, riverside forests, cobbled streets white villages and a tasty gastronomy in which Jabugo Iberian “jamón” is king. Villages dotting Sierra de Aracena, many of them officially declared historical-artistic preserved sites, maintain traditional architecture and past cultural expressions, such as crafts, popular celebrations or the use of common laundries and fountains. There is no shortage of castles and fortresses, reminding us not only of the constant war between Christians and Muslims during the “Reconquista”, but also of frequent disputes with the Portuguese neighbours. Aracena is the region’s capital, which names both the surrounding mountains and the Natural Park itself. Its famous Gruta de las Maravillas is the main attraction, being one of the most interesting karst topographic setting in Spain, but the rest of the town is also worth visiting. There, we can find Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor Church on the remains of the old castle, Asunción Church, Concejo Fountain, the art-nouveau Arias Montano “Casino” or the Jamón Museum. Alájar is a beautiful village in the heart of the Natural Park, surrounded by chestnut and cork oak forests, at the foot of the Arias Montano rocky mountain. As we walk through the hamlet, we discover its whitewashed houses, red roofs, fountains and monuments like San Marcos Church. As per its traditions, the feast par excellence is Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles Pilgrimage (Romería), in September. Almonaster la Real is a good example of Islamic heritage in Aracena, embodied in its wall and castle, where you can find one of the few remaining rural mosques in Spain. It is also worth noting San Martín Church, Santa Eulalia Hermitage, its popular Cruz celebrations and the Bienteveo wine. Linares de la Sierra lies in a deep valley surrounded by wooded mountain ranges. Its intricate location has helped keeping original architecture and traditions, presenting itself as a typical Sierra village. The most characteristic feature is its cobbles, which lay at the entrance of the houses as a carpet. Nor should you miss the laundry, the slaughter, woodwork and basketry artisanship, as well as tasting its most emblematic sweet: “piñonate”. There are many other fascinating villages within the Natural Park, like Cortegana, with its medieval castle, Cumbres Mayores and its Sancho IV fortress, Aroche with its menhirs and dolmens and the nearby Roman city of Turóbriga. We also find Fuenteheridos and its Doce Caños Source, Cañaveral de León with its springs and orchards, Zufre, La Nava, Hinojales or Jabugo, capital of “Jamón”. Those villages culture is intimately linked with the surrounding natural environment. In addition to the traditional livestock business, cork industry, pottery, basketry and woodcarving stand out. Throughout the year, there are plenty of livestock fairs, pig slaughtering, mushroom picking and numerous festivals in each of their villages: Pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Alájar, celebrations of the Cross in Almonaster the Real, village celebrations in Aracena or San Pedro Fair in Cumbres de Enmedio. No doubt, those who visit Sierra de Aracena seek the tranquillity and beauty of its natural landscapes, formed by medium size mountains, extensive “dehesas” of oaks and cork oaks, chestnut forests and riverside meadows, which follow the course of tributary rivers of the Guadalquivir, Guadiana and Odiel. Slate and quartzite prevail, giving a unique dark tone to the landscape, but we can also discover the presence of limestone strata that have formed interesting reliefs in caves, such as Gruta de las Maravillas in Aracena or upwellings like Arias Montano Rock in Alájar. Mild climate and high levels of rainfall, as well as extensive watercourses marking the territory, have favoured rich vegetation, which varies according to altitude and humidity. Among the aforementioned, one of the most beautiful spots are its riverside forests, populated with poplars, ash trees and willows, such as the Múrtigas. When it comes to the fauna, it is worth noting species like lynx, black vulture, black stork and griffon vulture. This park’s “dehesas” are well known for Iberian pig breeding. The best way to discover the natural beauties of the region is an extensive network of trails to cross on foot, bicycle or on horseback, stopping in its different viewpoints, with breathtaking views of the Park. You may also engage in mycology, bird watching and, if you are the active type, climbing, canoeing and other adventure sports. Last but not least, add the charms of popular gastronomy based on Iberian “jamón”, which has given so much prestige to the Aracena region. This is the cradle of the prestigious Huelva Denomination of Origin, where pigs grow freely, fed with acorns. They produce exquisite “chorizos”, “salsichones”, along with cheeses, chestnuts, mushrooms ... Discover the great diversity of their traditional dishes, such as chestnut soup, “migas”, chickpeas with jamón, “gurumelos”, winter gazpacho, rib stew or “carrillera”. Leave room for excellent desserts like “pestiños”, “piñonates”, dried apricots, “natillas” or pumpkin cake. Hoteles Casas Rurales en Aracena
