Know all about Coyhaique

Coyhaique is a city and commune of Chile, located in the homonymous province, and the capital of the Region of Aysén. It is located in the Chilean Patagonia at an average height of 310 meter altitude, at the place where the Simpson and Coyhaique rivers meet. The city was founded on October 12, 1929 as Baquedano -in honour of the Chilean general Manuel Baquedano-, changing its name in 1934 to differentiate it from the town of Baguedano in the Antofagasta Region. Its purpose was to facilitate the colonization of the area, as well as to support the functioning of the Industrial Society of Aysén, which maintained the facilities in the town since 1906. It has known a great growth since its establishment, becoming a municipality in 1948 and in the regional capital in 1974, within the framework of the regionalization process. Its communal territory extends to more than seven thousand square kilometers, including the towns of Balmaceda, El Blanco, Villa Ortega and Ñirehuao, among others. In its urban area are the offices of the Intendance, the Court of Appeals, the Government and the Regional Council, as well as the corresponding ministerial regional secretariats and the main public services. The city is connected to the rest of the region by different roads -especially the Carretera Austral- and with the rest of Chile through the Balmaceda Airport, which concentrates almost all the air traffic of Aysén.
